[1990-06-09-USWA-Memphis TV] Interview: Jerry Lawler

Lawler walks through a fire green screen, and accuses Snowman of walking around Memphis with his hand out. Pretty blatant racial undertones. Between Lawler teasing throwing fire, Kerry being the ref, and Eddie Marlin declaring the match will not stop until one guy pins the other, they really wanted to draw a big house.

This feud has taken a rather odd twist with Lawler and Snowman doing a semi-double-turn (even though Lawler was a heel to start with). Lawler accuses Snowman of constantly having his hand out and talks about what happens to a snowman in the winter time when the sun comes out. I liked the setting of this one quite a bit, actually. Lawler doesn't do a lot to put Snowman over but he doesn't bury him either--I'd be fine with heel Lawler promos like this.

Not quite your standard heel Lawler promo, as he works the analogy about the melting snowman into his spiel expertly, along with bringing out the fire extinguisher. I like the fact that they used a green screen for this; it really heightens the effect.

Kerry being the guest referee is treated as just as much of a big deal as the match itself. The way this looks to be set up, either Lawler will throw fire at Kerry and/or Snowman, or Kerry and Snowman will conspire to screw Lawler out of the title. Either way, it should translate into a sellout at the MSC.

A taped Lawler promo where he is in front of a green screen that makes it look like he is walking though fire. He says that The Snowman, or ‘home boy’, has been stood out here for weeks with his hand out like he always does, but lately that hand has been getting filled. First of all he came in here wanting a World title match, that he didn’t deserve because he’s not a contender, but he had his hand out and somehow got that title match. He couldn’t get the job done, so he stuck his hand out again and said that he’s got to have his own special referee. He got his hand filled again and he still couldn’t win the title. Now he’s got that hand out one more time and he’s got Kerry Von Erich coming in to referee this match, and everyone knows that Kerry hates his guts because he’s the man who beat him for the World Class championship and took his title away. He thinks that he’s got it all stacked in his favour now, but Lawler tells him what happens in winter time when you build yourself a nice, big Snowman and the sun comes out and the heat starts shining down on that Snowman? That Snowman starts melting, dwindling and getting smaller until there is absolutely nothing left of it. He’s going to turn up the heat Monday night at the Coliseum and make things so hot that he’ll have second thoughts about ever asking for another title match with the ‘King of Wrestling’.

Strange having Lawler cut this in front of that green screen. Was it all just for the punch line about Snowmen melting? There is a definite dynamic change here, as although he has officially been a heel all year, he was behaving and acting like a face in the first few weeks of this feud. There is a clear attempt to portray and make it clear that he is a heel here. Another good interview from Lawler in the build for the next match between these two.
