[1991-03-04-WWF-Primetime Wrestling] Big Boss Man and Bobby Heenan

We get the closet cam from earlier in the show. Heenan and Vince are getting ready for the show in the locker room and Heenan is constantly joking about the Big Boss Man's mother before the mystery guest the Big Boss Man shows up. Heenan immediately cowers. They already started teasing a post-WM feud with the Mountie. Heenan accidentally lets a comment slip about how Boss Man was raised and gets handcuffed to the mini-ringpost in the studio. Later in the show, Boss Man comes out accompanied by his mother, who proceeds to beat Bobby with her purse! She looks like Virginia Kelley. I wasn't aware that she ever made an appearance.

Heenan is aware of the possibilities of a hidden camera this time, but can't find one, so he proceeds to make more cracks about the Big Boss Man's mother. BBM chases Heenan up to the top of the stairs and cuts a pretty good, intense promo on Mr. Perfect that comes off as pretty out-of-place. They're already teasing a feud with the Mountie, and Heenan makes the mistake of saying, "At least he was raised properly." That leads to a cuffing, and BBM says that Heenan isn't worth having his rights read to him. Pretty sure Heenan could get all of this thrown out, in that case. At the end, Heenan says something that gets bleeped, which Vince has a ridiculous over-the-top reaction to, and that brings out the Big Boss Man's mother herself. That doesn't end well for Heenan.

More hidden camera with Heenan making bad comments about Bossman’s mom. Of course the special guest is Bossman. Heenan family isn’t much of stable at this point with Perfect being the main guy. McMahon wants to talk about The Mountie but Bossman has enough of Heenan and handcuffs him.

Bossman’s momma shows up and proceeds to beat the crap out of Heenan with her handbag. So I guess we do get a pay off to that one.

Seems like most enjoyed this segment but I think it is getting undersold as on the spectrum of campy WWF fun and Hennan getting humiliated, I would put this on part with the "wet weasel" stuff. Bossmans mom whacking him with the purse got the biggest pop out of me in the yearbook so far and I loved the delight the crowd had.

This was excellently done. Strangely enough, this was more satisfying than Bossman himself beating Heenan up would have been, even though we all know that Bossman's mom really wasn't hurting him, even in a kayfabe sense. In fact, she looked arm-weary after the first few swings, but the point had been made.

The inevitable question: Was this really Ray Traylor's mother? She looks like she could have been, but hearing her speak might have been more of a clue, and of course we didn't.

They're starting to tease Bossman/Mountie already, and it's a natural feud, considering their gimmicks. This is right about the time I stopped watching weekly in real time, so I'm interested to see how this feud plays out. I wouldn't think that Jacques could give Bossman much trouble without cheating, considering their size difference.

I'm warming up to this new format for Prime Time, particularly since you'd never see a segment like this with the old format. But I still miss the interaction between Gino and Bobby; try as he might, Vince just isn't as natural of a straight man for the Brain.

Even for plants, that crowd was loud and enthusiastic. I wonder if they sold some tickets locally in the Stamford area for the studio segments; I know the WWF staff was growing around this time, but there couldn't have been that many available employees to watch a taping, could there?

This kind of stuff doesn't work if you don't have a guy like Heenan. He is so damn good at taking what could be utter garbage and turning it into gold. I absolutely agree that Bossman's mom doing the beating is far more satisfying than anything Bossman could have done himself.
