Another year in the books. This year transcended some pretty big moments in my real life in becomming a father and this was one of the more nostalgic years I have went through as I was completely locked in with both of the big two around this point. I don't think the consistent match quality is here as in other years in the decade, and each promotion has times where it dips overall but this was still an enjoyable time trekking through the year.

Great list Chad. You have excellent taste in wrestling. As in I agree with the high end stuff and hopefully that means we don't both have bad taste. I'd have 7 of your top 10 matches in my top 10 from the Yearbook. That was slightly surprising to me as I thought there were lots of matches where we posted divergent opinions in the threads. Then I see your #11-#16 and the highest I have any of them is #71. That's a relief as I was getting worried about the PWO hive mind there.

What would you say were the promotions you enjoyed watching most and least during the year? And which matches in the upper echelons of your list were the most surprisingly good?

Cheers Zenjo and I am surprised at the 7 out of 10 thing as well.

I enjoyed watching WWF's plight as I thought their angles and overall presentation of the main event stuff was top notch for the entire year until December. It was fun to track that. WCW made me sad to watch because in some ways they had the most emotionally jarring moments of the year with Flair and GOldberg winning the title but they also had some straight shit with Warrior and most Wolfpac stuff. All Japan was a pleasant surprise as 1997 felt like them on the downside and I thought the big matches kicked ass for the year and they sprinkled in some abnormal stuff like AKiyama vs. Ogawa. Rings and Battlarts was of course a lot of fun. I probably least enjoyed ECW as I couldn't get into the angles and only 2-3 of the matches really connected with me of the footage I watched.

I definitely agree about the ECW being a low point. It's true that I don't like the promotion at all, hate the atmosphere, don't think there were any really great matches, think that anyone who was any good just passed through and most of the guys who were left were bad garbage wrestlers. Even given my slight bias it still felt like the promotion had little relevance to the American wrestling scene anymore. The Attitude Era had stolen their philosophy and the big 2 had stolen their best wrestlers. Its time had been and gone.

All Japan was the best promotion for me in terms of match output. Over the course of the 90's I'd guess the distribution of their matches in top 100 lists would be a lot more top heavy in the second half of the decade. Which is ideal for capturing in a comp. Year in year out I think New Japan is the most consistent promotion through the Yearbooks. Never the absolute best, but can always be relied on to produce plenty of strong matches.

I found a handful of Lucha bouts that I liked. I'd hoped to find more but there isn't much footage online compared with earlier years. Hardly anything from the late 90's ever get pimped. AAA was generally terrible and CMLL had cooled off after 96-97. There's plenty of good Joshi about from this time, it's just harder to find than before as it's so spread out. GAEA had the best of it, Arsion was refreshing and everyone else had some highlights. AJW was depressing yet still produced two matches that I absolutely loved.

This year was certainly the most fun I've had following the WWF through all the Yearbooks so far. At the time I preferred Nitro because the matches were a bit longer. These days neither 2m or 6m matches are of any relevance to me so I go with whoever has the better booking and storylines. And WCW lost that battle big time.

Rings was awesome, it's such a shame that shoot style basically died the following year. I found a Big Japan and Battlearts match I liked which is some progress. Late 90's FMW is overated. It didn't feel like a major promotion anymore.
