Injuries, death, retirements, etc...

I'm OK with it for retirement for sure but I think injuries and even some deaths depend on the situation because the entire continuity is different.

Guys may not need neck surgery in this continuity depending on how they're used.

And, not to make light, but I seriously doubt someone's going to send Owen Hart rappelling from the rafters if the project is still going 4 years from now.

I am all for injuries, deaths and retirements as in real life or by some sort of random roll of the dice but I do not think it should be in the hands of the owner of each promotion. We would always want what is best for us and that would be to use our superstars all the time but that is unrealistic. Just because our situations maybe different does not mean injuries and deaths don't occur. I mean take a wrestler who was used mostly in the Smoky Mountain Wrestling in his career in a relatively safe environment may now be in the WWF and going from major city to major city with more car accidents, murders, etc... We can't say just because they are in our promotion, we will keep everyone safe. If I could get a few extra people in to watch the USWA by rappelling Jerry Lawler from the rafters, who is coming from the rafters!

Obviously, I'd vote for ignoring real life, to protect Brian Pillman, Davey Boy Smith and Bret Hart. I'd, of course, be arguing that we've altered the time-line, so things wouldn't necessarily happen as they did in real life (especially in regards to freak accidents, or entirely preventable ones). That said, I'm also looking out for my top names when I say that, so I'm not being completely objective.

We either have to go completely RL or go completely random - 'cause like other people have said, you'd just end up protecting your own folks.

Probably a good idea.

Not sure how we do it random though?

I actually like the concept of randomness changing things from RL - so this is just an idea with five minutes of thought.

Every two or three months, we figure out how many active wrestlers there are on the roster and make a list. Then, go to random.org, ask it to give you 10 random non-repeating numbers, see which wrestlers those are. Then, for those 10 wrestlers, do another RNG between 1 and 52 and that's how many weeks they're out.

I'd prefer to stick to real life for deaths, if we are trying to stay realistic by kicking out a guy over him wanting to run Vamprio vs. Undertaker as his top WWF fued we should have the same level of realism in following the timeline in relation to wrestlers dying.

Owen is a difficult one, I'll admit that I don't want to see anyone booking him falling to his death, maybe will have Owen die peacefully in his sleep when the time comes but that's nearly 4 years down the road it's something we can put time and thought into how to handle it.

In regards to injuries, I'm planning to write injuries into my shows, we all should be good enough writers to incorporate injuries and the strain of being on the road into our promotion without the need for random elements.

How about this; We stick with real life, BUT...

IF the owner so chooses, he can make a case(in this thread, maybe, after the injury/retirement announcement is made) that the circumstances are different enough from real life that an exception/extension should be granted.

So: Dan Spivey was injured in October 1995 after being powerbombed twice by Diesel. LowBlowPodcast could make the reasonable case that, since Diesel is not in the promotion Spivey would maybe not be injured, and considering Spivey is 43 years old in the game world, it would be reasonable for him to keep wrestling for X more years. There would be a 24-hour period where Grimmas could make a counter-proposal (say, X minus 2 years, followed by 2 years of semi-retirement). The original owner could either accept the counter-proposal or ask for a vote.

If a vote is requested, another full 24 hours (48-hours?) are given where the other owners could vote to A. accept the original proposal or B. Accept the counter-proposal or C, Stick with real life.

I think that four votes should be counted a reasonable number of votes to make a decision, i.e. if 4 owners vote to accept the counter-proposal then the counter-proposal passes.

If no counter-proposal is made, there could be a 24-hour period where other owners could vote to accept or reject the original proposal. Again, 4 votes would be considered sufficient.

If a counter-proposal is offered but not accepted, both Grimmas and the original owner are exempted from voting.

If a counter-proposal is offered and accepted, no vote is necessary, UNLESS another owner asks for one. This might never happen, but it gives us an option if someone strongly disagrees.

If there is no counter-proposal, the original owner is exempted from voting but Grimmas may vote.

In case of dispute, or in case of fewer than four votes for any option, real life would always win.

I assume that the standard pattern would be: 1 - Announcement of retirement/injury is made.

2 - Owner proposes an extension.

3 - Grimmas makes a reasonable counter-proposal

4 - Owner accepts the counter-proposal.

5 - Nobody objects.

I assume votes would be rare, but fun.

Gordi's plan sounds good to me. I was planning on keeping things as close to real life as possible. Vader will be out for 3 months starting at the end of January. Dr Death won't be welcome to Japan until March. Maeda only worked 4 times IRL in 1996, but I've got him booked 6 times through May and then I'm going to shut him down for the rest of 96 and will only really use him sporadically as a special attraction going forward depending on how far we take this project.

I also plan on writing in some injury angles too at certain points.

I don't know what to do with something like Owen Hart. But I think Gordi's plan is a good one.

Of course there's a chance that in cases like Owen or Hayabusa, collective sentiment might overrule real life... But is that necessarily a BAD thing?

On my own roster, I can imagine Kobayashi easing into a comfortable semi-retirement in the next couple of years, joined eventually by Kato Kung Lee and Dos Casa. Nostalgia acts get over pretty big in Japan, but I am not sure how it goes when they are wrestling week in, week out.

Actually I think we should keep the guys like Owen Hart, Brian Pillman, etc alive and Hayabusa not paralyzed. Its fantasy booking after all, I'd rather keep those guys alive/healthy and I'm not counting on everyone going until 1999 (if we keep this up in real time) anyway so it may not even be an issue. (Although I sort of hope we do and if people start dropping out I may have to change up and start posting a "monthly card" once a week to burn through some really long term plans).

Where I'd prefer to stay closer to reality is things like age and injury. It doesn't necessarily have to match up perfectly to what happened in real life. But if we know someone is injury prone IRL or suffered a major/career altering injury or had to start taking time off due to injury, I'd like to see that sort of kept in mind. I'm keeping in line with the IRL Vader injury and Maeda's super limited schedule. Burning guys out isn't necessarily a problem when you run monthly, but I will at times have guys take a show off to recover from a long series of hard matches or a number of losses to "train & regroup." I will also try and keep age & injuries into consideration. There's an old joke I remember reading like 15 years ago on Classics or tOA:

"Akira Maeda" is the Japanese phrase for "Out with a Knee Injury."

I know Maeda is injury prone and his body is crumbling apart. Even if I pushed his retirement back and ran my UWFi 2010, Maeda would never ever work every show.

But yeah. Lets keep everyone alive and not paralyzed.
