UFC 203: Because CM Punk is finally fighting

He was doomed. Remember he had that fight with Teddy Hart while in TNA and Hart got the best of him.

You usually have to have a base in something to get you over the hump until you catch up in other areas. But Punk is pretty terrible. Like I said, I have friends that weekend Warrior MMA and do some amateur fights here and there and I don't think he could beat most of them or a lot of amateurs with any level of experience.

It really, really makes me respect Brock Lesnar a lot more than I already did. He was obviously juiced out of his mind.. but so were many of the guys in the UFC across all weight divisions. Mir, Carwin, Dos Santos, Couture, probably Velasquez, Overeem.. Overeem and Carwin were fucking science projects.

Brock is a freak. He almost made an NFL practice squad based on nothing more than his athletic ability.

Brock was also a National Championship wrestler in college. Wrestling is the best foundation for MMA that exists, because you get to decide where the fight takes place. If you can either take your opponent down or stop your opponent from taking you down, you have a huge advantage.

The real issue isn't Brock's athleticism, but CM Punk's complete lack of athleticism. If you're the worst athlete in a fight your technique has to be good enough to overcome the athletic advantage. Punk's body looks broken, which isn't surprising after years of pro wrestling, but he can't keep up athletically. Look at someone like Yoel Romero, who is 41(at the least, he's a Cuban refugee...there is no telling how old he really is) but is still as good of an athlete on the UFC's roster. He's an Olympic silver medalist who seemed to learn striking by learning all of the things that can knock someone stupid before learning how to properly move his feet. His athletic advantages are going to keep him at the top of the middleweight division for the foreseeable future. He's fought plenty of people with better technique, but his athleticism allows him to smash them any way. That is the kind of person who excels in the UFC. An insane athlete, with world class wrestling technique, and he just lost what could very easily be his last championship opportunity. This is not something you can just decide to do because you're bored.

Cabana never visited backstage after Amann filed the lawsuit. He went to dinner with two friends from the roster when they were in town.

Well that does change my opinion, obviously. And it's not just terrible, but deeply weird - what a strange fellow Punk is.

Yeah, we are sure there's anything to this Cabana issue? According to the reports, they were friendly in court.

Punk himself referred to Cabana as his best friend in a couple of interviews after the case was over. The report about them having a "falling out" was almost two years ago though, I guess they could've patched things up a while ago. Now, the original rumor said it was because Cabana went backstage to a RAW show and took pictures with people. If Bix says that didn't happen, I wonder if they ever had a falling out in the first place.

I never say stuff like I said above.. but I'd kick his ass. I know I'd kick his ass.

Have you ever grappled? Seriously, if you haven't done any grappling, he'd probably take you down and tap you in the first round.

I don't know how anyone watched that first fight and thought Punk had any business in the cage with a professional fighter. He decided to become fighter at a time of life when most fighters are thinking about their exit strategy, and that is before we take into consideration all of his previous injuries. He's never been a good athlete, which is a huge detriment when you are trying to be a professional athlete. The amount of arrogance it takes for a dude who never even wrestled in high school to believe that he'd be able to be a professional fighter in his mid-to-late 30s is legitimately insane. It is like someone who never played football deciding to becoming a NFL quarterback. It is incredibly stupid for anyone to believe he'd be able to do it. I honestly don't know how he got past the licensing board.

There is a huge lack of respect for how good these guys are at fighting. I remember someone telling me that they thought Alberto Del Rio could beat Conor McGregor in a fight. These aren't just dudes off the street, getting drunk and fighting in a bar. These are serious athletes who train up to 8 hours a day to become better fighters. The amount of talent, athleticism and skill that it takes to be an elite MMA fighter is so much higher than anyone gives them credit for. People really believe that random assholes who used to do Tae-Bo can compete with professional fighters. Stop it.

This is fake news. I never said that Del Rio would beat McGregor in a fight. I only said it was absurd to think that McGregor would beat his ass.

On a completely unrelated note, it just occurred to me that having Curt Hawkins break his losing streak by squashing Mike Jackson would be so hilariously petty that I fully expect WWE to do it.

Del Rio would get his ass kicked and knocked out within the first 3 minutes of the fight.

WWE should go for the deep cut and bring in 80s jobber Mike Jackson to get the win.

To be fair, Conor is both a world class fighter and someone probably getting drunk and fighting in a bar. Plus he's also (allegedly) not unfamilar with the ways of the Columbian powdered arts.

See the bolded for what differentiates him from Alberto.

Del Rio is former world-class amateur wrestler with MMA experience. He may not be an elite fighter, but he's not just some guy off the street either. He also outweighs McGregor by nearly 100 pounds. I have no idea who would win in a fight between the two, but I can guarantee McGregor wouldn't get a first-round knockout. He has yet to show he can knock out a welterweight, let alone a heavyweight.

IMO the most alarming part of the Punk fight is he had all this time to train, and by all accounts was putting in the time, and that was the best he could do.

I'm not anywhere close to resembling an athlete but you would think after all that training there would be *some* improvement. I know by literally all accounts (even his own) Punk is a stubborn asshole, but at some point someone in his camp should have said that this whole MMA thing isn't working out.

There are people that have commented that he's actually really special in that he put in all that time and looked that bad during the fight,

I think the real problem for Punk is he has zero athletic ability and almost no instinct. He has no redeeming qualities as a fighter.

It was working out for him financially, so there was no reason for him to quit but personal pride. Apparently he got paid half a million dollars for doing this fight. I'd do it.
