http://prowrestlingonly.com/index.php?/topic/21780-jun-akiyama-vs-masao-inoue-noah-spring-navigation-042306/ - Akiyama vs Inoue feels like the sort of match everyone on the board should watch and have an opinion on, one way or the other.

Just to tally: it looks like, oddly enough, IpponDropkick and oldbirds didn't give each other matches and DR Ackerman and dawho5 didn't give each other matches. JoeG hasn't given NintendoLogic one. Everyone else came through, but some just recently though, so I'm giving things til Monday for people to watch those. It means we slip a week, but I think that's ok.

DR gave me a match I had for sure seen before, but on rewatch I liked it quite a bit more.

I thought the first caida was by far the best, but it did entertain all the way through. It won't win any MOTY contests, but it's got a lot of good going for it. Review is here.

Thanks Victator, Brad Armstrong vs Jushin Liger was a match I never saw before, but it was essentially the perfect babyface TV match.

Some good matwork for the first half that lead to an exciting finishing stretch with dives and quick pin attempts. Nobody lost their cool, just having a match to try to win.

Really fun contest!

Week 20. We finally slipped one. Ok, having Ippon dropkick and oldbirds go again since they didn't last week. Giving Joe another shot in the random roll. Tim is out for now.

Finally I got Matt D, which means....... well, no idea what it means, except here is a match filled with character work and the world's greatest babyface in Mayu, the awesome Toni Storm against character heel and bad ass Hana Kimura and Kris Wolf (a wolf trapped in a american girls' body, living in Japan).

and I get a Super Porky match, Matt D is the best!

Really fun contest!

Look up the rematch they had in 96 on Worldwide. It actually plays on the 92 match.

I watched Quake vs Haku and overall I enjoyed it. I can't think of a Quake match I hate. Haku the performer is very underrated. He could be a good heel or babyface depending on the situation.

Random thought but why did WCW not call him John "Quake" Tenta? WWF can't own calling a guy a natural disaster. WCW could have signed Earthquake Ferris to show WWF did not think of it or Earthquake McGoon from Lil'Abner.

The match seems to start awkwardly with Haku busting out some flying offense. There is a neat middle portion where they have a war of headbutts.

Quake matches his gigantic skull vs Haku's Tongan headbutt. Quake is careful to headbutt Haku in the gut and chest. Haku wises up and blocks with his head.

We get some beautiful suplexes from Quake as Haku musters a comeback. It has the body press into power slam finish that I have grown to dislike. Up there with the bridging suplex but victim has his shoulder up and the Bret/Piper sleeper finish.

I enjoyed it, but not as much as I would have thought.

Not sure of the date or if there's a thread, so replying here.

This was right in line with part of why I started this project. I haven't seen any of this stuff, really. I haven't seen a Toni Storm match. It's not that I haven't had any interest but there's only so much time and so much to watch so I'm glad I had a chance to.

This was a very fun sprint which was part comedy, part quick paced action. It felt like it's purpose was to cement the Storm/Mayu team/friendship by showing them overcome a well-oiled machine unit. I thought the early comedy stuff with Hana was tremendous. Just absolutely confidence and commitment to character. Likewise the heels (they're heels to me at least) utilization of the ribbon/objects felt like pure ritual, things the fans would know and respond to. Great execution on the rope running/most of the spots though I wish that maybe they went slightly more simple on things that were two degrees too complex (Storm's corner backcracker thing, for instance, but on the other hand, I absolutely loved the roll up into the corner spot). Wolf is the world's best Skandalo. There were a couple of instance of the story just dropping out. I liked that it kept going back to the heat due to the heels working together/cheating, like with the double suplex spot, but then one rotation later, they had another suplex spot that really went to the heels without incident. I would have liked to see a callback or the first one built upon because it would have furthered the story more than the heels just reestablishing their dominance for no reason. Likewise, I would have liked a break-up from Storm after the top rope double knee (especially since it was immediately followed by Hana running interference on her, really for no reason since she didn't break it up). Those are nitpicks though. In general, I thought this accomplished what it set out to do pretty effectively and it's obvious what Storm brings to the table both with her explosiveness and with her ability to react to character appropriate comedy spots..

So sorry about my lack of participation recently. Will definitely try to catch up.

Dean Ambrose vs. William Regal

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yjxCpI5OXi0

The first thing that popped up into my mind when I saw Dean Ambrose make his entrance was how weird it was for me to see Jon Moxley not in a deathmatch environment. But once I got past the initial shock, so-to-speak, I thought it was a really fun match. And overall, I think this match kinda captured the spirit of what was Jon Moxley in the indies, without getting into the gory stuff that he was doing in CZW for instance. Basically, being Jon Moxley without being Jon Moxley, if that makes sense. For me, the best part about this match is the disturbing and sadistic creativity that William Regal used throughout the match to work on Ambrose's arm, from trapping his arm in the middle turnbuckle pad to doing the same with the steel steps, forcing the referee on intervene in both cases. My favorite heels are those who do everything - all the little things to draw heat and take advantage. For instance, why are heels so hesitant to do what Regal did at one point in the match by virtually smothering Ambrose during a rest hold? It might not seem like much to several people but this is the kinda stuf that I like seeing the heels do and I feel like more often than not, they don't fully capitalize on this and they resort to cheap heat with the crowd rather than just furthering their heel work by doing the little things like this. Overall, I'd give it 3 stars because I would've still liked Ambrose to have a little bit more offense in the match as Regal got like 75 or 80% of the offense in the match. Very fun watch.

Glad you liked the Stardom match, I thought it would be something you've never seen, but be up your alley.

SUPER PORKY vs UNIVERSO 2000

Two guys I rather enjoy! Hey it's a title match, which is an odd fit for Porky.

Some fun technical stuff in the first fall, but boy is it awesome when Porky get control and squashes Universo for the win. Into the second fall and damn do I LOVE Porky working holds. There is something about a bowling ball applying a STF that is just fun. It's all a technical battle with Universo getting the submission.

These two exchanging holds i not what I expected, but it was a treat.

Final fall now! More matwork which leaads to the contest picking up a lot of steam. Porky stomach bumping Universo out of the ring then hitting a SUPER splash to the outside ruled! The ending shocked me with Universo countering a slam into an inside cradle for the win.

Overall this was tons of fun and a great watch! Thanks Matt!

For HeadCheese, here's Kawada vs. Taue from 1991.

Holy Demon Army explodes (Does Fabian Kaelin theatrics). Akira Taue does amazingly athletic moves for his for the time period as well. The crowd is hot. The blood gets amplified when the it on Kawada's. Taue should have known Kawada's legs because Kawada's legs are really strong. This is a really good match.

Still haven't watched my match from last week as I've been traveling without much time to watch stuff, but here's my match for Nintendo Logic

I find deathmatch wrestling repugnant on basically every level, and scaffold matches uniformly suck, so I went into this with low expectations. To the match's credit, the scaffold was mostly a nonfactor. I find that gimmick matches work best when the gimmick is an accent rather than the centerpiece, like I Quit matches that feature the microphone as little as possible and strap matches where the wrestlers concentrate on whipping each other rather than trying to touch the four corners. Regardless, this felt like more of a carnival geek show where the goal was to use the light tubes as creatively as possible than a wrestling match. They lost me completely when Miyamoto kicked out of an Emerald Flowsion off the scaffold through a table. There were so many kickouts of big moves that by all rights should have ended the match, I half expected the finish to be something like a small package. As it turns out, the actual finish was appropriately brutal and incorporated the scaffold to boot. I also wasn't really feeling the use of traffic cones as weapons. That seemed more appropriate for a WWE comedy street fight than a Japanese deathmatch.
