What a second night... so many surprises... and I will go on record that I am not the biggest on the Japanese contingent doing so well...

Obviously, I am totally stoked to see Inoki in the finals and Baba in the semi-finals :)

I marked out for both Baba victories, particularly the one over Piper.

Fujinami and Fujiwara have been in the same stable for a while now, so it makes sense to see Fujinami using a Fujiwara Arm Bar... In fact, I think I'll add it to his repertoire in Japan now. Loved that match.

I am looking forward to Baba vs Orndorff and the JWA Tag Title match, and Martel vs Gordy (not gordi)

Lots of amazing action so far. Definitely looking forwad to seeing how the final matches of the tournament play out. Sad to see my AWA boys out but they went out in classic style. White went down to a more experienced opponent, Pillman put in a valiant effort that impressed the crowd, Piper made a reckless miscalculation, and Rose was hoist by his own petard. Can't wait to see how night 3 plays out.

Johnny Rougeau Memorial Cup Day 3

May 3rd, 1986

Forum de Montréal

(After a recap from last night’s events, we go to the broadcast booth for the final day of action)

Guy Hauray: Hello everyone and welcome to our final day of action in the Johnny Rougeau Memorial Cup. We already know that Antonio Inoki is in the finals and he awaits the winner of our opening match to see who he will wrestle for the cup later. And also we have the main event for the World Heavyweight Championship. The rubber match between Rick Martel and Terry Gordy, despite Martel’s physical condition. It should be amazing.

Édouard Carpentier: Yes, it will, Guy. We know that Martel will show a tremendous amount of heart, despite the seriousness of his injuries in the past 2 days. But we will be in for a treat for sure.

Guy Hauray: We should not forget also our special attraction as Power Rush defend the JWA Tag Titles against the duo of Ken Patera & Crusher Blackwell in a hardhitting match!

Édouard Carpentier: Hard-hitting is the right word. What a fantastic afternoon it will be. What are we waiting for?

Guy Hauray: Nothing! We’re ready to go and let’s find out who’ll win the Cup!

Match #1

Semi-Finals

Paul Orndorff vs Giant Baba

As expected, a show of sportsmanship between both Orndorff and Baba to start. Once again, Giant Baba’s size plays into his favour and Orndorff finds himself in a physical disadvantage for the first time in the tournament. Obviously, he realizes that he won’t be able to hit his piledriver to beat Baba so he focuses on destabilizing the big man so he goes for a series of high knees and hits his Diving Kneedrop but Baba kicks out. Baba makes a great comeback and his trusted Big Boot gives him another victory as he moves to the finals!

Winner: Giant Baba (8:55)

Match #2

JWA Tag Team Championship

Power Rush (Riki Choshu & Rusher Kimura) vs Ken Patera & Jerry Blackwell

The challengers certainly are intent on bringing the titles back to their territory and they take the advantage early, singling out Riki Choshu in the early going. Choshu & Kimura with the quick tags against Patera but eventually a missed elbow drop by Choshu is the tide turner for the challengers. Patera and Blackwell work on Choshu’s back and they trade turns with bearhugs on Choshu. Eventually, Blackwell goes for a big splash and he misses, allowing Choshu to tag in Kimura. And what a hot tag it is as Kimura cleans house! The end comes with Kimura hitting a Sambo Suplex on Ken Patera to score the pinfall and Power Rush retain!

Winners: Power Rush (9:37)

(We go to the broadcast booth before the start of the finals of the tournament, where Guy Hauray seems to be concerned.)

Guy Hauray: Before we go to the finals, I need to pass the information that UWF World Champion Nikita Koloff has been spotted in the Forum, despite the heavy security surrounding the area. We have no idea what are his intentions, especially in regards to the main event but we hope that nothing serious will happen. With that in mind, let’s go to the ring for our final match of the tournament.

Match #3

Johnny Rougeau Memorial Cup Finals

Giant Baba vs Antonio Inoki

Both Baba and Inoki shake hands before the start of the match. It’s everything we would expect out of these two as the puro style is featured throughout the match. After some back and forth, Giant Baba seems to be poised to win the match but as the referee tends on a seemingly injured Inoki following a missed kneedrop, NIKITA KOLOFF jumps the barricade and chop blocks Baba! The referee is still oblivious (and obviously Inoki as well) to what is happening as Nikita grabs his chain and climbs on the 2nd rope to hit the Russian Sickle on Baba! Inoki then realizes what Koloff just did and he gingerly gets back to his feet. Koloff steps outside the ring and is escorted out of the Forum by security. Inoki has a chance to win it but he doesn’t seem to want to win that way. Inoki helps Baba back to his feet and the match continues! Finally, after a few more minutes, Inoki’s strongest asset became his demise: Inoki goes a Bridging Fallaway Slam but Baba’s weight is too much. Baba hits another Big Boot to Inoki and this time, he gets the victory! Giant Baba wins the Johnny Rougeau Memorial Cup! Raymond & Armand Rougeau come out to extend the trophy and $50,000 check to Giant Baba, who graciously poses with the trophy.

Winner: Giant Baba (14:26)

MAIN EVENT

NWA World Heavyweight Championship

Rick Martel © vs Terry Gordy

Lots of excitement before the start of the match as the referee once again checks on Martel to make sure he’s still willing to go through with the match. The referee doesn’t even have the time to show the belt to the audience that Gordy jumps on Martel! Gordy is dominating Martel in the early stages of the match but somehow, Martel fights through the difficult moments to regain some control in the contest. Martel goes for the Slingshot Splash early but Gordy lariats him and he falls outside. Gordy tosses Martel around the ringside area as much as the referee’s count allows him to and both men get back in the ring. Gordy wants to humiliate Martel as much as he can and he locks in the Boston Crab on him! The crowd is solidly behind Martel and the champ finally grabs the ropes. Gordy goes for a piledriver but Martel counters with a back body drop! Martel goes for the Slingshot Splash but only gets a 2-count. Martel whips Gordy in the ropes but Gordy reverses and nails Martel with a big boot. Gordy goes for a powerbomb but he only gets 2! Gordy says that’s it and he sets up Martel for the belly-to-back suplex but Martel falls on his feet and hits a beautiful dropkick! Gordy goes down and Martel steps on the apron and hits the Slingshot Splash to get the win! The crowd explodes and an exhausted Martel receives his belt from the referee. The show ends as Rick Martel steps outside and goes to celebrate with the crowd at ringside to conclude the 3rd Annual Johnny Rougeau Memorial Cup.

Winner: Rick Martel (15:19)

WOW! Baba wins it! I thought Inoki was going to win, after that attack by Nikita. Fun and surprising ending. Japan really looked strong during the 3 day event. Successful title defenses and representing the finals. Martel overcomes the odds and defeats Gordy. Once again Martel proves he's the real deal. Awesome event! All your hard work paid off. Outstanding job Edger!

What an honour and a great surprise it is to have Giant Baba win the cup. I loved the booking of the final, the way Inoki decided not to take a dirty win reminded me of Bret vs Piper from WM VIII. Really good story-telling there.

Hopefully Baba and Nikita will be able to work out their issues in the ring somewhere down the road.

The visual of Martel landing on his feet and hitting the dropkick was just great. If a monster like Gordy can't take the belt from an already beat--up Martel... who will be able to dethrone the champ? That's how to book a guy to look strong!

In the booking of this tournament, I knew right away that both Martel & Nikita wouldn't make it far in the tournament so I wanted both of them to have significant impacts in the final day of the tournament. Every involvement of Nikita in the past 3 days was planned since the beginning to further the current Martel vs Nikita angle in the NWA. I knew that people would've expected Nikita to interfere in the Martel vs Gordy match so that's why I decided to pull a swerve and have him interfere in the Finals itself. Just a bit of a mind game and reminder to everyone in the NWA that Nikita is more than determined to be the man in the NWA.

As for Giant Baba winning the tournament, there was a couple of names I was thinking about to win the tournament but I settled in with Baba. I thought it just would make an interesting backstory with Baba winning the tournament, including beating the NWA World Champion while Jumbo Tsuruta gets the title shot in 3 weeks vs Martel in Japan. Looking forward to see how this will develop. ;)

I'm just going to ignore it completely ;)
