I watched the 3/25 Dragon's Gate show last night. Nothing really blew me away on the show but DG is usually fun either way. Liger beat Fuji in the main event to win the Open the Dream Gate belt in a pretty solid match. The highlight of the night was probably Jun Akiyama beating the hell out of Stalker Ichikawa Z who's fucking hilarious in the ring. His role in the company is to basically get the shit kicked out of him by big name talent from other promotions.

I watched the Dragon Gate 12/22/06 PPV a few nights back. I've heard a lot of folks pimping the Mochizuki/Ryo Saito main event, in the king of gate finals. And after watching the match, I must ask why? It was full of the same stupid no-selling and delayed selling that you'd find in big Kobashi matches and late '90's AJPW main events.

I've never been a fan of Ryo Saito, but I try to give him a fair shake, and matches like these keep reminding me why I don't like him.

I was just watching Colt Cabana's debut in OVW and it's no wonder WWE thinks OVW is such a shithole. The announcing is god awful with that guy I think his name is Dean. He makes Jim Ross sound like Gordon Solie with his mumbling. And who are the guys in this Team America group? I know Koslov is in it and Mike Kruel but who are the other guys? They are horrible.

I couldn't tell you. I gave up on OVW for good last summer when it turned into a total shithole worker wise. Real shame too as it was a really good promotion when Cornette was booking even when the workers were sub-par. It really makes the WWE future seem bleak when all their projects are completely awful.

Dean Hill? He's been there for a long time.

He's a former Louisville PD K-9 officer who used to work security for wrestling at the Louisville Gardens.

As other have said, he may suck on the mic but the Louisville fans love him, so he stays in place.

Note to self: actually put together announcing demo tape like I've been meaning to do for two years now. Send tape to WWE. Pray they don't notice I'm going bald.

Now THAT'S funny. A guy who's entire comedy gimmick is to get trampled by the visiting guest stars? Finally, someone found a loophole to the whole "how do you book a star who's big enough to be a draw but small enough to job to one of your guys?" indy dilemma.

I think they use him as a way to lure in bigger stars with the idea of a match where they don't have to bump. Most of his moves include doing a rope walk where they just kind of walk around the ring with him and then fling him when he goes for a move and the other one is he tries chopping them in the corner until he wears himself out and has no effect.

I like him in the six man tags quite a bit but I'm fairly indifferent towards him as a singles. Though I like a lot of other guys more than him as far as Dragon's Gate goes.

Saving up to get married next year has put a huge strain on m finances, so I'm rather limited in my 2007 viewing, but I can only think of a couple guys offhand that I dislike more than him in DG.

Note to Spunk: When you and Doc were going at it last year on HWL over who's better Saito or Necro, you pretty much nailed it.

Dean Hill was awesome during the Johnny Jeter/Matt Cappotelli angle where he became so upset at Jeter he stood up and just went off on him. He's a tall motherfucker so it added visually to the idea of a usually mild mannered announcer losing control when faced with such nefarious heeling.

That whole angle was one of my favorite things of the last 10 years, it was so old-school and so well done that it made baby Jesus weep that all WWE could do with Jeter was to make him a male cheerleeder. That was pretty much the writing on the wall that none of the guys I was really into watching would ever make it in WWE. In fact, the only one from that time who's on a WWE roster was Elijah Burke and it's an exercise for the reader to determine if being a midcarder in ECW counts as making it.

That actually really sucks, mainly for the archive of good posts from lots of people over there.

Maybe at some point, we can do a GWE-style poll here. It's probably too soon now after the last one, but maybe at some point in the future we can do it and tie it in with the DVD club somehow.

Funny stuff from Maxim:

The Ultimate Warrior

Age: 48

Odds that he'll die before 2008: 20 to 1

Why he should be dead: For the better part of the late '90s, we actually thought the Warrior (his legal name since 1993) was dead. His disappearance from the ring sparked countless rumors of his demise, but the man once known as Jim "Justice" Hellwig is still alive and delivering rant-filled speeches to directionless college kids all over the country. The clip proves his brain is mostly dead, so his (probably) steroid-riddled body can't be far behind.

How he'll die: Years spent screaming at the top of his lungs and tying off his joints to make his veins pop result in an explosive brain aneurysm during one of The Warrior's tirades.

The Iron Sheik

Age: 67

Odds that he'll die before 2008: 5 to 1

Why he should be dead: As Howard Stern fans already know, the Sheik has a bit of a drinking problem, along with a volatile temper that makes Ron Artest look like John Stockton…in short shorts. Plus, we're pretty sure there's nothing but tumors underneath that mustache.

How he'll die: We're guessing bear attack. It's a long shot, but given the unlikely circumstances that have taken the lives of other professional wrestlers, it's not entirely unreasonable.

Ric Flair

Age: 58

Odds that he'll die before 2008: 8 to 1

Why he should be dead: We were shocked to find out that Nature Boy was born in 1949 rather than the late 1800s. It's obvious that he still has all the style and charisma that made him a legend, but he's also spent more time in the sun than the pyramids. Skin isn't supposed to be bright orange, unless it's on top of a delicious bowl of macaroni and cheese.

How he'll die: Flair will tragically choke to death in a feather boa accident. During the autopsy, doctors will find that his skin was replaced with that of a beanbag around 1989.

Dusty Rhodes

Age: 61

Odds that he'll die before 2008: 10 to 1

Why he should be dead: Even when Dusty was in his prime, his man boobs suggested that the American Dream spent as much time with Bit-O-Honeys as he did with barbells. Now that he has no reason to exercise, he has a regular seat in every rib joint south of Delaware.

How he'll die: Can you overdose on barbecue sauce? If anyone can find out, it'll be Dusty.

Looks like Smarkschoice has finally gone, after not being paid for the best part of a year.

Shame to lose the posts though, especially the GWE list.

I was wondering why they up and disappeared. That really, really sucks.

Alvarez:

Smackdown is tonight with MVP vs. Matt Hardy in a non-title match and Ric Flair vs. Fit Finlay. Believe it or not, this is the first ever singles match between the latter two. True story. Years ago when Finlay first came to WCW, everyone was terrified of him because they'd heard of his reputation as a tough guy, and that he worked really stiff. Shortly after he arrived, he was booked in a match with Flair. Flair showed up, saw the match on the board, and erased it.

Something I posted elsewhere and I was wondering how you guys would evaluate this statement.

All this has led me to one key realization about the business as a whole. Wrestling needs not fear the loss of kayfabe. It doesn't matter if fans know it is fixed or not. Fans still CARE about who wins and loses, and that is the most important factor in selling a wrestling card.

I'd argue against that. I think the WWE struggles so much because they've made wins and losses so meaningless that people won't let them get themselves invested in anyone. It also doesn't help that they job anyone out who gets over when they don't want them to.

Has Wild Pegasus posted on any message boards since the Benoit incident?

I'm pretty sure he has, just that he had his name changed from Wild Pegasus. I can't remember what it is to, but clearly, the Benoit worship is over.
