  1. Since this is a message board, I know there must be some DC area folks on here.. Black Cat (14th between S and T NW) will be screening a Dusty doc at 5:15 today. Free! and a chance to share memories and stories about one of America's most iconic figures. What a sad day it is.. To start new ones without him.. Rest in peace Dust
  2. It is contextual in time.. that's how people view their lives. The Carolina crew you mention, I think they worked differently than the Calgary crew. But maybe we should get into particular wrasslers and matches. If only because I wanna revisit both.. haha! But I don't think they necessarily overlap, and Brett ended up as the forefront of the promotion, when it did change it's style. Not to mention the reputation NYC had in the wrassling world at that time. Check the topic title, someone's using Bret's words to hang him. Who had better matches, Carolina vs Calgary in the WWF ? would be more direct.. or so I think 😏 Was the work rate before Bret really better? Especially after he became a belt holder/feature? As work rate was defined at the time? No clue about the podcast. If that's central to the discussion, than obviously, this is about Bret.
  3. It was the right thing for their business.. Keeping Lou on top. Buddy was the only guy worth changing their minds. If Lou guzzled guys, which I don't fully believe, it was worth it. How many towns/territories did Lou hurt as NWA champ ? The USA loves dominant champs.
  4. How do you define kayfabe ? When did you first learn the term? Has your understanding of kayfabe changed since? It's been said that kayfabe is dead, is it? Is it's death necessary for pro wrestling moving forward? Generally curious as to what the board may think..
  5. Also, Rocco and Jones.. did they invent a style? No. I'm not a WoS expert, but I don't see the connection. I understand the influence thru Dynamite, but it doesn't read as what I've seen of Stampede or what they did in the WWF. I'm open minded on this point, so if there are examples, what would they be ?
  6. As I understood it.. reading the Brett autobiography.. the Calgary crew raised the work rate in the WWF. I'd have to go back and double check.. but I don't think he was saying he invented a style in the WWF. NYC certainly had a bad rep as presenting "wrestling" when the Calgary crew showed up, so I'd think in Bret's mind it was relative to what was being done before hand. It's contextual to the time, not what we can see with 30ish some years distance. If you wanna establish who yr favs are -now- from that time period.. go for it. But don't hang a man over his words.. especially when they show the logic of the time.
  7. Appreciated.. I'll get to digging.
  8. NOAH is just a downhill slope. There are no missed opportunities. Misawa was always out of his depth as the man in charge.
  9. Sorry, those were more open ended questions for the board.. not specifically for you. I appreciate the info, as I've been out of the indie scene. Was utterly unsure what was good attendance at the moment. By the EVOLVE project.. I think it's an idea, a theoretical sandbox if you will. It doesn't draw.. I know that. Mixing grappling with non-grappling (I'm not sure how to properly define the split) isn't novel in the grand scheme. But, I don't think they're doing that. I need to see more of what they're doing. But so far they seem to be working in a more closed field. I kinda get a BattleARTS feel from what I've seen so far.. which makes me wonder the point. (Which reminds me.. gotta watch that Yoji Anjo retirement show again..)
  10. Why should Buddy not be included ? He toured. He was of the NWA system. He's a part of the story as much as Hutton. He's not transitional, or a phantom switch. I know there's business around the Thesz match and NYC splitting off.. but I don't quite get it. Would love to hear more.
  11. Is the national work by JCP out of bounds for Flair as NWA champ ? 88-89 is the period I'm thinking of. I don't understand the arguement for Brisco's inclusion, but will certainly listen. No one is throwing out hard numbers.. but if there's some boundaries.. I'm happy to try and collect numbers..
  12. What kind of attendance numbers constitue a good drawing indie in 2015 ? Which groups would fit that bill ? With footage availability being what it is, does one need the larger live crowds to make just a stylistic impact? The EVOLVE project is interesting, but it can't really succeed without a way to work with the rest of the indie scene. I'd think running two or three as invading troupe would do better than Thatcher touring as a showcase of the style.. but I'm not sure if EVOLVE is even in a position to control such a situation.
  13. Killer year ? But it's only May! 😏 Which matches have been most impressive? The 2/3 falls match has my interest piqued.
  14. When old timers talk about being "smartened" up, I always took it to mean the more nuts and bolts of the business. As in, this is a booker.. this is the office to call.. this is a finish.. save your gas receipts.. so on and so on. These guys were amateur athletes mostly. They knew they were training, and what they were training for. Do the reps, these are the basic mechanics, you've seen the show.. but it's on you to figure it out.
  15. It's already been one for a bit. I don't think it's drawn any extra money into the indies though. I'm no expert on the indies tho.. Dedicated "mat" wrestling sticks out stylistic in the US, and it's been that way for a long time. The next step would be integration. People love style clashes, but I'm not sure how well the realities of what Thatcher does mixes with the realities of most wrestlers. It requires (forces?) the opposite worker to make conceits that may be difficult to acheive. If a middle ground was acheive en masse.. that'd lead to some interesting stuff, and maybe some extra interest at the door. In other words: If Briscoe vs Thatcher was announced tomorrow, I imagine people would be incredibly interested. But how successful of a match would it be ? Japan ran into a lot of problems along these lines. But there was much more money on the line then.
