  1. No doubt they were trying too hard (I think I have a near-fanatical desire to expose how tragic that prolonged effort was for the business). I just don't know if his actions were supposed to be perceived as cool* as opposed to super-villainous. *Let's be clear, I don't care, ultimately. Rape is among the unthinkable offenses that, to me, are incredibly unwise to portray in pro wrestling subject matter. I'm not onboard, personally, under any circumstances. Hell, I think overt blasphemy is a stupid idea, and I'm a left-winger. I just wonder if we think that one can validate booking/writing rape if (and only if) the justification the creative team gave was "he's the bad guy!" Because...ideally...that would always have to be part of the justification, right? Not that they haven't made Kane the Rape-Babyface a couple of times, I think.
  2. Is it valuable at all to talk about the kayfabe element here? Example...HHH's faux-then-real-then-DUDE THESE TWO PEOPLE ACTUALLY GOT MARRIED LATER ON wedding angle was designed by a company desperately trying to get him over as the uber-bad guy (never worked, in my estimation). I don't know if I even validate (let alone accept) the idea that it isn't a reinforcement of rape culture if it's the bad guys who are doing it...and that's an especially bullshit argument in the Russo-Attitude Era when no one was supposed to be a true face or heel...but I do feel reasonably certain that They were the heels would be the counterargument offered by the writer/bookers.
  3. Bumping a very old post to report that I just snagged a bunch of Stevens on Ebay (in transit). Here's the rundown on the matches, no idea whether they'd help PWO bridge some footage issues (noting that I see some matches here discussed above): BEST OF RAY STEVENS VOL. 1 Ray Stevens vs Al Fredricks Ray Stevens vs Red Bastien Ray Stevens vs Dr. X (HiLites) Ray Stevens vs Dick the Brusier Ray Stevens/Pat Patterson vs Billy Robinson/Frank Hill (aka Jules Strongbow) Ray Stevens/Ivan Koloff vs Paul Jones/Masked Superstar Ray Stevens/Jimmy Snuka vs Paul Jones/Masked Superstar (Cage Match) Ray Stevens/Tor Kamata vs Steve O/Brian Blair Ray Stevens/Jimmy Snuka vs Ricky Steamboat/Jay Youngblood (HiLites of Stevens & Snuka Winning World Tag Titles) Ray Stevens/Jimmy Snuka vs Ricky Steamboat/Jay Youngblood (Rematch for World Tag Titles) BEST OF RAY STEVENS VOL. 2 Ray Stevens vs "Wild" Bill Irwin Ray Stevens/Eddie Graham vs Stan Lane/Bryan St.John (Florida Tag Titles) Ray Stevens/Mike Graham vs The Gestapo/Thor the Viking (aka Super Destroyer/.Scott Irwin) Ray Stevens/Jimmy Snuka vs Masked Superstar/Blackjack Mulligan (World Tag Titles) Ray Stevens/Ole Anderson vs Paul Jones/Buddy Landell (Ray & Ole Argue) Ray Stevens vs Gerald Finley Ray Stevens/Ole Anderson vs Rick Thor/El Gran Apollo Ray Stevens/Tor Kamata vs Bob & Brad Armstrong Ray Stevens vs Billy Robinson Ray StevensMr. Fuji/ Don Muraco/Buddy Rose/Superstar Graham vs Andre/Rocky Johnson/Salvatore Bellomo/Jimmy Snuka/Pedro Morales in a Best 3 out of 5 falls match BEST OF RAY STEVENS VOL. 3 Ray Stevens vs Ron Haven Ray Stevens/Tor Kamata vs Jerry Grey/Charlie Fulton (Dick Slater Attacks Stevens & Kamata) Ray Stevens/Jimmy Snuka vs Frank Monte/Tony Tusi Ray Stevens/Jimmy Snuka/Ivan Koloff vs Ron Ritchie/George Wells/Dewey Robertson (aka Missing Link) Ray Stevens vs Tony Garea Ray Stevens/Jimmy Snuka vs Ricky Steamboat/Jay Youngblood (World Tag Titles) Ray Stevens vs Tony Russo Ray Stevens vs Rick Bennefield Ray Stevens vs Ken Hall/Eddie Dean (Handicap Match) Ray Stevens/Tor Kamata vs Mike Fever/Bobby Ga...(cut off in message) BEST OF RAY STEVENS VOL. 4 Ray Stevens/Tor Kamata vs Don Gilbert/Denny Brown Ray Stevens/Tor Kamata vs Rick Thor/Abe Jacobs Ray Stevens vs Mike Jackson Ray Stevens vs Curt Hennig Ray Stevens vs Tom Zenk Ray Stevens/Jimmy Snuka vs Ricky Steamboat/Jay Youngblood (HiLites) Ray Stevens vs Jimmy Snuka Ray Stevens vs Jay Strongbow Ray Stevens vs Jay Strongbow (Rematch) BEST OF RAY STEVENS VOL. 5 Ray Stevens vs Mighty Inoue (Rare Match from Japan) Ray Stevens vs Jules Strongbow Ray Stevens vs Sal Bellomo Ray Stevens vs Crusher Blackwell Ray Stevens/Spike Huber vs Sheik Adnan ElKasiey/Crusher Blackwell Ray Stevens vs Larry Zbyszko Ray Stevens/Blackjack Mulligan/Baron Von Raschke vs Bruiser/Crusher/Sailor Art Thomas Ray Stevens vs Johnny Kharisma (aka Hans Schroeder) Ray Stevens/Midnight Rockers vs Buddy Wolfe/Kevin Kelly/Doug Sommers And yes, I bought these because I too am wondering about his reputation vs. what we can review. 4. I really don't know what to think about this rumble match. I loved it until the last third of the entrants, when the young talent was put on display*; now I have literally no idea what this company is doing. I can't think of a match at Wrestlemania that this helped to set up, except I guess now I think Reigns might face the Undertaker. No idea who that one benefits (though if they hadn't already ended the streak I could EASILY see the point). As it is...sigh. Goldberg/Lesnar meanwhile, I don't see the point of repeating the narrative. How does that change the stakes at WM, except now a pissed-off badass is...pissed off? Meanwhile, I can't think of a full-timer who came out of that match better than when he came in, with the exception of Stroman and Corbin (both of whom were booked to be dominant until suddenly they just...weren't). I don't really give a sh*t about Orton one way or another (never have) except to say that it's pretty obviously wrong that he's going to be main-eventing, considering everyone else who could be. I suppose this is the pattern one must accept when viewing the WWE's product; good shows in isolate, but hard to be happy with the big picture. *Actually, it may have been one of the best openings to a rumble I've seen. Differ with the above criticisms of Cass in the opening; I actually thought he worked well with the guys he was paired with.
  5. You have got to be shitting me with Roman entering.
  6. Here's one I don't have a solid opinion on...crowdsourcing: Is it the best thing for a PPV to be pimping Rollins-HHH if the former isn't on the card? I get the intent but I can't decide if it's best for the company.
  7. Wow, man...I'm actually liking all the near-falls in this one, and that's usually my #1 complaint about the current in-ring product. I can't remember the last time I enjoyed a WWE-main event style match that much.
  8. I think I'm going to restrict in my praise/criticisms as we go to simply whether or not what I see helps the company: I see literally no virtue in setting up Stroman and Reigns with neither leaving tonight with the belt. I also see no virtue in making Jericho's role in the match unrelated to the finish (thus not advancing that storyline either). Finally, I think we can all get together on there being no virtue on not turning Reigns heel. Except maybe I guess it's possible he won't be in the main event? And I don't think Vince and company would see that as a virtue.
  9. I didn't see the match and haven't watched enough of Anderson/Gallows' WWE push to comment on THAT, but..I fail to see the point of using Cesaro as a transitional champion on any level. He's too good and deserves much better.
  10. I didn't see the brass knucks coming. I figured what with the No DQ stipulation and Jericho being crafty and all he'd be a nonfactor the whole time. I'm as stupid as the writers think I am. Fuck this company.
  11. For my very first post (have long been an admiring reader): Excess, to me, is paradoxical, in that it usually manifests itself in repetition. It's pretty rare that I see something for the first time (or even the first time in a while) and said "Man, that was excessive." Katie Vick, maybe? When near-falls lack any suspense because a company has made them a regular feature of every match (obviously the current WWE product is an example; one thing that blows my mind is that everyone gets multiple near-falls in every match, now, on everyone)...that's excessive. They no longer serve the purpose they're supposed to serve, in keeping audiences invested in the outcome. If the WWE would simply save "Near-Fall-A-Paloozas" for special occasions, we'd start suspending our disbelief. As for hardcore, bloody, "pro-pain" promotions...I just want it to serve a purpose. If the guys are clearly beating the crap out of each other just because the audience has grown accustomed to it...same tired, excessive effect.
