  3. this has been a great series to listen to. I love the idea of the top 10 or 20 of each 80's dvdvr set...and maybe instead of a bowdren podcast, at least compare it to the bowdren list.. The analysis of each match certainly generates interest in watching matches that I have either forgotten about or never have seen before. Keep it up. The " List's " podcast seem to breathe new life in the genre.
  4. Out of curiosity, I picked up the Bret Hart autobiography, which is pretty comprehensive -but absolutely no mention of this in the book.
  5. just listened to roster analysis -part 3 and I'd like to make a point or two.. rating the wwf roster in comparison to the others is unfair. The promotion didnt need a stacked roster to fill arenas. The Northeast arena circuit ( msg, boston garden, philly spectrum) were a once a month deal,.. and they were usually packed each month, ,The draw was the wwf championship match, the intercontinental, and the tag title match. you also had a fourth match featuring a strong babyface (tony atlas) versus a strong heel( Khan). After that - you had four of five filler matches with the same guys that were in the promotion all year long..( the denucci's, rodz, jobbers, etc, ) it should be noted that the monster heels brought in to feed backlund ,stayed as long as it took to squash jobbers on tv and have a relatively short program with the champion (consisting of two or three arena matches in the circuit). The champion was rarely on tv so the title matches felt important- drawing fans to the arenas ( once a month in each major market). If anything, Vince Sr. plucked a few guys from each promotion for relatively brief programs. Parv did hit on this a bit., In conclusion., Only a few guys and the titles were needed to carry the wwf promotion. Challengers were brought in from the other territories for programs with the champion,,, and then would leave. At least half if not three quarters of the roster was irrelevant. By the way... love the podcast. Oh and for the Backlund haters, Backlund did draw! Nobody left the arena during those wwwf title matches!
  6. What would really be cool is comparing the best matches on each 80's set and figuring out the combined overall best matches of the 80's ( top 10,20, etc, etc.) it would be interesting to find out which 80's matches or set gets the most love.... Of course, it will be 2018 or so until all the 80's sets are complete..... But maybe compare what is out so far .... Hmmm?
  7. Hey brick..... Sorry, no Boston Garden taped matches before May of 1985, In May, WWF started broadcasting the monthly cards on the New England Sports Network ( NESN) much like the MSG network had. Prior to this, only occasional clips of the previous month were shown during the promos for the Boston house shows. I remember taping these promos monthly, including the clip finish of the intercontinental title change between Santana and Muraco in 1984 ,as well as a snuka plancha over the top rope onto muraco hyping their steel cage blow off match for the next boston card. Damn,,,, I wish i saved those.
  8. Good show... I grew up in the Boston market and started watching in October of 81' i've attended all of the boston garden shows until about halfway thru hogan's first year as champ.I have some comments on backlund.and wrestling in the northeast at that time...Backlund was over... And 99 percent of the time, his matches were billed as the main event... Unless there was some rare angle that overshot the championship match. The champ was almost never on tv, except for interviews, making backlunds presence and the title matches feel important. I can see why many would consider " New York" style boring. It is a slower pace,,, the mentality in the area was that pro wrestling is a more legitimate contest - at least in the world title matches... We had no access to wrestling in other parts of the country at the time.i will concede that backlund needed to be fed strong heel's to draw people in as well. I can tell you that the garden fit just under 20.000 in attendance and it was nearly sold out every month. Also, wwwf tv mostly consisted of squash matches and interviews hyping the monthly card. Also, there were mostly only one or two angles that would last five or six months in the territory only... Title matches were the main draw in the bigger cities. The world champ would almost never appear in a spot show. The best territory comparison would be 70's- early 80's AWA.

  11. This one has always fascinated me. Bret Hart walks out from the back during a match and goes over to the announcing table- starts jawing with McMahon about getting screwed because shawn michaels is chosen as the referee for the Summerslam main event between bret and the undertaker. It gets heated and physical, culminating with McMahon and hart exchanging fisticuffs, and then a pull-apart. If you check out the LEGENDS OF WRESTLING roundtable--- " significant moments of wrestling" broadcast, Jim Ross picks this moment as a significant moment in wrestling history. It is one of the first " Mr. McMahon" moments, so it qualifies. What gives this the air of reality, is that JR appears shocked that it took place with this intensity. It's possible that this was vaguely scripted and it got carried away in a physical sense. I believe JR mentions that he was in "fear" during this segment., so I found this quite interesting.
